* please excuse the ridiculous amount of typos and repetitive photos. I'm doing this from my phone and to tired to fix it, though the editor in me cringes!*
Phew today I did 100+ miles, making up the miles I skipped yesterday. I recrntly checked into the hostel san luis obispo, showered, washed all my clothes in the sink with tide to go, and am now at an italian restaurant up the street ready to eat, then crash (of course with stretching first! Bad practice not to).
Let me start from the top.
First, I made an amazing choice to camp at Pheiffer Big Sur state park last night. It was totalky gorgeous-- I slept and did yoga under the redwoods! I had a much better fake tent! It just got a little chilly at night so I kept waking up ro put on more layers. Also some other bikepackers arrived as I was going to sleep, so I fell asleep to their foreign sounding (australian?) selves setting up camp with much cursing and audible farting... anyway thanks for that guys...
Oh right. I was also just in time for the park because you know those fires I mentioned yesterday? They were actually one huge fire, moving south. The rangers were evacuating the whole park by noon today. So I just slipped in.. and it's also good I'm heading South.
Here are pics from camp:
So starting out towards Lucia turned out to be more big sur like roads- all up or down, no inbetween. I've never used the highest ir lowest gear on a 27 speed bike before, I don't think, but now I'm super familiar! Sometimes shifting several times a minute. Also there was NO cell reception or wifi around for about 60 mi., including a mire than 1000 ft summit (bigger than yesterday!). I kept stopping at each little outpost and they kept tellinv me go to the next town, over and over, until I was out of the mountains. For the record, these peole have no accurate sense of where the next town is- 30 miles plus a mountain isn't "just down the road". Anyway. I did see some people pulling over on the curves to puke, so that was amusing. Also the fog was crazy like whhaaaattttt.
Once I got through that, it was much smooyher sailing for the rest of the day by the coast, through San Simeon and to Morro Bay.
I saw:
Beaches
Other bikepackers!
Elephant seals - they make a sound like a drain unclogging.
A pasture full of ZEBRAS. I am not kidding. This was right in between san simeon and cambria if someone wants to look it up. I'm sure my pictures do not show how cool this was.
Lots of cows, horses, rabbits, chipmunks, birds etc. It is funny from the bike to hear SO MUCH rustling at the side of the road, then you realuze there are a ton of animals there.
Hmm not sure what else. San Luis Obispo is really cute, I rose in through the main street areas. It will be nice to sleep in a real bes tonight. Oh man I BIKED MORE THAN 100 MILES TODAY AND NOW I CAN SAY THAT!! Weeeeeeeee!!
