Day 2 - watsonville to big sur

So much has happened today it is hard to remember where I started-- especially because I've been through 3 drastically different areas!

First I left sunset beach for Monteray via a bunch of quiet, foggy farmland. The route was pretty awesome, including some roads right through farms. Then I got to a bike path that I took for literally hours, all the way into Monteray. In sand city I was riding alongside this dunes national park for miles.

Then in Monteray, the path became a multiuse beach path. It was so entertaining I actually missed my turn off and so did a few extra miles with the backtrack - but very pleasant boardwalky/park/beach miles.

Leaving through carmel highlands and carmel, the views started to be tremendous. But then when I got to big sur, it was a whole new level of magnificent. Not for faint of heart, but also not as scary riding as it looks. All the cars were going super slow and there were tons of people stopped at all the viewpoints along the way.

Oh I forgot to mention all the fires! I actually saw some in the hills on the way to big sur. There were road signs warning about fires and a whole campsite was shut down, and for many miles there were fire trucks and people and equipment on the side of the road every quarter mile or so. I took one picture of a fire- it is hard to see blending with the fog, but the smoke goes straight up while the fog is sitting horizontal like a blanket.

Now I'm at a restaurant/inn/grocery place in big sur contemplating my next move. Most likely I will try to camp around here rather than continue to Lucia as intended, because google says it is another 3.5 hours biking from here and I am le tired. Big sur takes big effort. See? Bad jokes. Time to wrap it up. On the plus side, my waiter accidentally brought me a full salad with my dinner instead of a side salad, to be pictured somewhere below. And I'm going to eat it all!!!
